In a heartfelt
address marking Sierra Leone’s 64th Independence Day, Dr. Samura Matthew Wilson
Kamara, former Chairman of the All People’s Congress, called for unity and a
renewed sense of national commitment. His speech emphasized themes of
integrity, active citizenship, and the collective responsibility of Sierra
Leoneans as the nation reflects on its journey and envisions its future.
Dr. Kamara began
by expressing gratitude for the sacrifices of previous generations, stating, “Independence
is not just a history we celebrate; it is a responsibility we carry forward.”
He urged citizens to honor those sacrifices by working diligently to fulfill
the aspirations passed down through the years.
Acknowledging the
challenges Sierra Leone has faced, Dr. Kamara praised the resilience and unity
of its people. He appealed to Sierra Leoneans, particularly the youth, to
reject division and embrace national service, declaring, “Let us choose
unity over conflict.” His vision for the nation includes moving away from
corruption and despair toward a cooperative and dignified society.
Dr. Kamara
outlined a future where every citizen has access to dignity and opportunity,
asserting that this vision is achievable through collective action. He
reaffirmed his commitment to a Sierra Leone that prioritizes justice, prosperity,
and peace for all, urging citizens to view Independence Day as a moment for
renewed dedication to these ideals.
He called for the
creation of a new covenant among Sierra Leoneans, built on integrity, service,
and mutual sacrifice. “Let us therefore engage our collective strengths to
conquer our difficulties,” he encouraged, emphasizing the importance of
unity in overcoming challenges.
Dr. Kamara also
criticized the prevalence of political propaganda and insincere promises,
advocating for accountability among leaders and truth in public discourse. He
envisioned a brighter future for Sierra Leone, where citizens’ voices are
heard, dreams are validated, and every individual thrives.
Concluding his
address, Dr. Kamara offered blessings to his fellow citizens: “May God bless
you all. May God bless the Republic of Sierra Leone. Long live Sierra Leone!”
